Welcome to the Scheepjes Crochet in my DNA MAL! I’m so so excited to get started! I hope you’re too!
All written instructions are available in English (US + UK terminology) and Dutch. The video-tutorials will be available in English and Dutch as well.
Voor Nederlands: Scheepjes Crochet in my DNA MAL Introductie
To help you prepare for the MAL, I’ve organized all important information on this page. First of: all materials and sizing. We have LOTS of possibilities for styles, colours and Scheepjes Yarns and we had so much fun playing around with all of them. I’m not sure if all these options make it easier or more difficult for you to choose, but choose you must!
After you’ve gathered your supplies, I’ll teach you (or remind you) on the 23rd of April how to crochet Corner to Corner and Mini Corner to Corner. We’ll make a few swatches together so you can choose your materials, the appropriate hook size and which version of Corner to Corner you want to use.

Who are we?
It’s a whole mouthful: the Scheepjes Crochet in my DNAL MAL by Hook to Hook and Een Mooi Gebaar.
The name of the project is a reference to the Helix in DNA: these are the pieces that rotate around each other. When you look at the project, it also seems as if there are pieces that rotate around each other. If you look at a different color variant, it sometimes seems to rotate in a different place or in a different way. Cool, right?

The project was designed by Hilly, her artist name is Hook to Hook. Hilly is a designer from the north of North Holland, retired, mother of four children and married. Hilly learned to do crochet at a young age and has always continued to do so. She did not like sewing loose pieces together, which is why she went looking for a technique that would no longer require this. She has stacks of beautiful blankets in her house, all with her own technique, a variation on the corner-to-corner technique.

Since 2020, Hilly has been working with me, Iris, the driving force behind Een Mooi Gebaar. I have been crocheting for about ten years now and with Een Mooi Gebaar I make crocheting accessible to everyone. My crochet patterns, more than a thousand of them, are often translations (with permission!) of other designers, or my own designs, or designs from followers. They contain no abbreviations and almost always clear step-by-step instructions. I want to make the world more colorful, more fun, more relaxing. I want to get people away from all the bad news and doom scrolling on social media, and help people to let their creative talents flourish in a relaxed way.
Materials for the Scheepjes Crochet in my DNA MAL
We have put together a number of different colour options for you. I will also explain how to calculate how much yarn you need if you want to work with other yarn that is not on this list.
Scheepjes Colour Crafter – C2C
You will need a total of 10 balls of 8 colors. You will need 2 balls of each of the colors on the outside, and 1 ball of all other colors. The project is crocheted with a 3.5 mm hook and the border with a 3 mm hook. You will also need a darning needle and scissors. If you want to hang the project, you will also need a stick.
- Colour A = Red/Maastricht 1246; 2 balls
- Colour B = Blue/Knokke 2012; 1 ball
- Colour C = Pink/Heerlen 1432; 1 ball
- Colour D = Orange/Gent 2002; 1 ball
- Colour E = Black/Ede 1002; 2 balls
- Colour F = Green/Charleroi 2016; 1 ball
- Colour G = Purple/Brugge 2003; 1 ball
- Colour H = Yellow/Brussel 2004; 1 ball
This project will be approximately 75 cm wide and approximately 110 cm long. The tension for Scheepjes Colour Crafter is 7,5 blocks = 10 by 10 cm. Obtaining gauge is NOT critical for this project: there should be plenty of yarn to make the project is your gauge is slightly off.

Calculating yarn requirements
Step 1: make a swatch with the desired material, of 5 by 5 C2C (or mini C2C) blocks. You can follow the video or photo tutorial on the 23rd of April for this.
Step 2: make another swatch with half a crochet hook size smaller and with half a crochet hook size larger and decide which of the three you like best.
Step 3: weigh your nicest swatch on a kitchen scale and write down how many grams of yarn you used
Step 4: you now know how many 25 blocks of C2C (or mini C2C) weigh with your material and tension. Now multiply your number of grams per color using the calculation model below and write down all your answers.
- Colour A: 836 blocks (your measured grams times 33,44)
- Colour B: 456 blocks (your measured grams times 18,24)
- Colour C: 412 blocks (your measured grams times 16,48)
- Colour D: 432 blocks (your measured grams times 17,28)
- Colour E: 456 blocks (your measured grams times 18,24)
- Colour F: 432 blocks (your measured grams times 17,28)
- Colour G: 456 blocks (your measured grams times 18,24)
- Colour H: 812 blocks (your measured grams times 32,48)
Step 5: Now divide the number of grams you arrived at by the number of grams per ball (often 25, 50 or 100 grams).
Step 6: Now you have the number of balls per colour. Take it a bit generously, add at least 10%.
Now you can order or gather your yarn and get started!
Designing your own color option
You can also pick 8 colors and make your own design. Make two sets of four colors, the colors are always in the same order. The colors on the sides of the strips are always the same. Make sure the colors contrast enough so that you can see the Helix pattern. You can receive a free coloring page in your email inbox to help you visualize your planned blanket, by subscribing in the green box below.
