Scheepjes Crochet in my DNA MAL – Swatches – English US

Welcome to the Scheepjes Crochet in my DNA MAL! I’m so so excited to get started!

All instructions are available in English (US + UK terminology) and Dutch.

Voor Nederlands: Scheepjes Crochet in my DNA MAL – Proeflapjes
For English UK: Scheepjes Crochet in my DNA MAL – Swatches UK

To help you prepare for the MAL, I’ve organized all important information on this page. First of: all materials and sizing. We have LOTS of possibilities for styles, colours and Scheepjes Yarns and we had so much fun playing around with all of them. I’m not sure if all these options make it easier or more difficult for you to choose, but choose you must! All information about the Materials can be found here: Introduction and Materials.

After you’ve gathered your supplies, I’ll now teach you (or remind you) how to crochet Corner to Corner and Mini Corner to Corner. We’ll make a few swatches together so you can choose your materials, the appropriate hook size and which version of Corner to Corner you want to use.

Swatching and practicing the technique

There are (at least) two versions of Corner to Corner. There is the normal Corner to Corner and the Mini Corner to Corner, which is smaller (you couldn’t have guessed ;-)). Corner to Corner is often abbreviated as C2C. Mini C2C is denser, firmer, has fewer holes, produces a smaller result. Regular C2C is a bit softer, drapes better, becomes a bit bigger, has slightly larger holes.

I recommend that you make swatches in both techniques, using the hook size stated on the label (or the hook size you normally use for this material). Then I recommend that you make them again, using half a hook size smaller and half a hook size larger. Then you can make a good choice between which hook size you want to use and whether you want to go for the C2C or mini C2C.

The video tutorials for the entire project will show the C2C. The written pattern is also completely for C2C, not for the mini C2C.

One colour at a time, join as you go

This MAL uses a unique twist on the normal way of C2C crochet: we will crochet per color and not in diagonal rows with hundreds of small bobbins on your work as is per usual. We make each color, panel by panel, fasten off and then move on to the next color. You will never have more than one ball of yarn on your work.

Even if you have crocheted C2C before, I would advise you to just follow along. My writing style may be new to you. For example, I do not use abbreviations in my crochet patterns, because I have learned that they are difficult for people with dyslexia, brain damage, or for people who use screen readers (e.g. blind people) to crochet. I want to be inclusive in my business and therefore do not use any abbreviations.

C2C Swatch – Row 1:

Chain 6, double crochet into 4th, 5th and 6th chain from the hook.

C2C Swatch – Row 2:

Chain 6, double crochet into 4th, 5th and 6th chain from the hook. Flip the first block so that your hook is next to the chain space of the previous block. Slip stitch into the chain space. Chain 3, 3 double crochet into the same space.

C2C Swatch – Row 3:

Chain 6, double crochet into 4th, 5th and 6th chain from the hook. Flip the first blocks so that your hook is next to the chain space of the previous block. (Slip stitch into the chain space. Chain 3, 3 double crochet into the same space) x 2

C2C Swatch – Row 4:

Chain 6, double crochet into 4th, 5th and 6th chain from the hook. Flip the work so that your hook is next to the chain space of the previous block. (Slip stitch into the chain space. Chain 3, 3 double crochet into the same space) x 3.

C2C Swatch – Row 5:

Chain 6, double crochet into 4th, 5th and 6th chain from the hook. Flip the work so that your hook is next to the chain space of the previous block. (Slip stitch into the chain space. Chain 3, 3 double crochet into the same space) x 4. You can count 5 blocks next to each other at the bottom of the work, 5 above each other on the side of the work and 5 diagonal blocks, right?

C2C Swatch – Row 6:

Now we stop increasing on both sides, effectively decreasing. Chain 3, turn your work, slip stitch into chain space of the same block. Chain 3, 3 double crochet into the same space. (Slip stitch into next chain space, chain 3, 3 double crochet into the same space) x 3. Slip stitch into next chain space.

C2C Swatch – Row 7:

Chain 3, turn. Slip stitch into chainspace of the same block. Chain 3, 3 double crochet into the same space. (Slip stitch into the next space, chain 3, 3 double crochet) x 2. Slip stitch into the next space.

C2C Swatch Row 8:

Chain 3, turn, slip stitch into chain space of the same block, chain 3, 3 double crochet into the same space. Slip stitch into the next chain space, chain 3, 3 double crochet, slip stitch into the final chain space.

C2C Swatch Row 9:

Chain 3, turn, slip stitch into chain space of the same block. 3 chain, 3 double crochet into the same space. Slip stitch into next space. Chain 3, turn, slip stitch into chain space on the corner. Normally, this is where you chain 1, cut the yarn and pull all the way through, but for a swatch you can just put a stitchmarker in place to keep the loop steady as you work on your next swatch. Please put a piece of paper on the swatch so you’ll know what hooksize and method (C2C) you used.
